Why We're Launching on YouTube First
When we decided to launch The Real Impression, we had to make a critical decision: audio-only podcast or video podcast?
We chose video-first on YouTube, and here's why.
The Data Doesn't Lie
YouTube Is the #2 Podcast Platform
According to recent data, YouTube is now the second most popular podcast platform after Spotify. But here's the key difference: YouTube pays creators.
Discovery vs. Distribution
Apple Podcasts and Spotify are distribution platforms. If someone already knows your show exists, they can find you there.
YouTube is a discovery platform. People find new content through recommendations, search, and suggested videos.
Monetization Timeline
- Traditional podcast: 1-2 years to monetize through sponsorships
- YouTube: Monetization possible within months through ads + memberships
Video Adds Context
Body Language Matters
When Lisa explains a complex tax strategy or Jason discusses mindset shifts, seeing their expressions and gestures adds context that audio alone can't provide.
Visual Aids
We can show:
- Tax forms and business structures
- Diagrams and flowcharts
- Screen shares for software demos
- Guest reactions in real-time
Clips for Social Media
A 60-minute video podcast gives us dozens of short clips for Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Audio-only content is much harder to repurpose.
The YouTube Algorithm Advantage
Longer Watch Time = More Reach
YouTube's algorithm favors longer watch times. A 45-minute podcast episode that keeps viewers engaged will get recommended more than a 5-minute video.
Search Traffic
People search YouTube for business advice, tax strategies, and leadership tips. We can rank for those searches. Audio podcasts don't show up in YouTube search.
Community Features
YouTube offers:
- Comments for discussion
- Community posts for updates
- Live streaming for Q&A sessions
- Memberships for exclusive content
Our Multi-Platform Strategy
We're not abandoning audio platforms—we're just starting with video.
Phase 1 (Launch): YouTube
Full video episodes, optimized for YouTube's algorithm
Phase 2 (Month 2): Audio Distribution
Extract audio and distribute to:
- Apple Podcasts
- Spotify
- Google Podcasts
- Amazon Music
Phase 3 (Month 3): Short-Form Content
Repurpose clips for:
- Instagram Reels
- TikTok
- YouTube Shorts
- Twitter/X
The Investment Required
Video podcasting requires more investment than audio-only:
- Camera equipment
- Lighting setup
- Video editing (more time-intensive than audio)
- Thumbnail design
- Video hosting costs
But the ROI is worth it:
- Faster audience growth
- Better monetization options
- Higher engagement rates
- More repurposing opportunities
